The View from the Far West Side

the west side
Photo by myself from 26th Street and 11th Avenue, in Chelsea.

The far west side in the mid-20's is not as dense as you'd think.

This is the view looking northeast from Mark's office at 26th Street and 11th Avenue, in the far west reaches of Chelsea. The building steps back a bit and there is room for a long balcony. What results is an expansive view.

The Empire State Building is ahead, at 35th Street and 5th Avenue. Behind me on the left is the Hudson River.

Because of the recently constructed public park nearby, the High Line, this area is undergoing some change. This neighborhood was rarely trafficked not long ago.

Now the sidewalks are actually populated. Old warehouses have been converted into offices and gallery spaces. In a bit of time, the entire neighborhood will change.

What a GREAT skyline photo, Kitty! A cousin of mine from Sweden, Berit, and a college friend of mine from Norway, Steven, are touring NYC right now - please tell them hello if you bump into them!!

Great photo, Kitty! But tell me, is it flopped? I can't get my head around looking north from the far west side and seeing the Empire State Building to the left--in other words, further west?!?

this looks like a splendid place to take a break from work!

Thanks everyone! Mark is so lucky to have this terrace to relax on. He brings Rupert there too, on some occasions, but Rupert is too short to enjoy the view.

Olivier, I haven't been on the tram to Roosevelt Island yet, believe it or not. It is certainly on the list!

Hi Terry,

The ESB is more on the right in the photo. So I'm looking diagonally east and a bit north. The ESB is at 35th and 5th, which is more in the middle of the island. I was standing at 26th and 11th, which is almost in the Hudson River, ha.

Okay, now I see it, Kitty. Of course. Just caught the Chrysler Building to the left and now understand that you're looking mostly eastward. I didn't think you would flop the shot, but you had me totally confused. Thanks!

huh. I can understand, Terry. If you were standing along the lower east side looking northwest, you'd have a similar view. Different buildings, of course.

That's the Empire State Building, though, which is much more centrally located than the Chrylser, which is further East. ESB is on 5th Avenue.
