Outside the Peninsula Hotel

Peninsula Hotel, nyc
Photo by myself on Fifth Avenue, around 55th Street on the Upper East Side.

The Peninsula Hotel on 55th Street is adorned with flags and some gorgeous, ornate architecture.

I took this photo from the back of a cab.

You might notice that parts of the Peninsula facade project quite a bit over the sidewalk - there are balconies and a rather deep overhang. I'd say the overhang might be 24" deep.

In New York, owners of buildings taller than six floors need to have the exteriors of their buildings professionally inspected every five years. It used to be that the inspectors would look at a building through binoculars, but after several accidents, they now have to go up to inspect facades firsthand.

Nice work with all those skyscrapers then. But indeed better than that a structural glass panel is flying through the air as we had not so long ago in Amsterdam.

Wow - that 's quite a job! We have had a lot of glass balcony panels falling to the ground from towers downtown.

The hotel is wonderful, on the outside, as well as on the inside. I cannot stop recommending them, their service is really great. I stayed one weekend this summer, by way of finding a good deal on the website http://new-york.hotelscheap.org/. If you have the possibility to stay there, do it!

Hello! I love your blog and the street level familiarity of your photos. My work brought me to NYC for a year and the lobby bar in the Peninsula was the favorite place for my wife and me - classy, modern décor but still old world, chic and New York-y, AND we could actually hear each other! Best bar snacks in the city, hands down - and they know how to make a REAL martini. BTW its on the west side, not east and really a midtown haunt, not an "upper." Cheers!
